I reviewed 8000+ fully remote jobs, here's what they have in common

Last week, I wrote about my analysis to 55.000 remote jobs, and the countries that dominate.

This week I continue running queries against the JobsCopilot's database, which this week pulled ~8000 fully remote jobs.

So, today let's dig into these fully remote jobs, those jobs that you can apply from anywhere in the world. These are the ones we all want, right?

I'm analysing job titles, skills, seniority, industry, company type and department. Let's see what these fully remote jobs look like and find patterns:

I clustered Job Titles, and unsurprisingly Software Engineer came out on top. In fact, 38% of all Fully Remote jobs available are in the realm of software engineering. A total domination over the long tail of job titles available as fully remote, ranging from other tech roles, to marketing, to sales and beyond.

Given the domination of Software Engineering on the job titles, it's without surprise that we see almost all the top-20 of highly demanded skills being software development related. Python on top, and then the "usual suspects" Javascript, SQL, AWS, and other popular programming languages, frameworks, cloud providers, etc.

Note that 2 non-software engineering skills make this top-20: Salesforce is the most popular skill for remote sales jobs, and SEO is the most popular skill for remote marketing jobs.

I must be honest about the years of experience, I expected to see mostly jobs demanding 10+ years of experience on top, it's a popular belief that only the most experienced people can apply to remote jobs.

The reality is very different though. Most fully remote jobs list either 5, 3 or 2 years of experience. Only less than 4% list 10+ years of experience.

It feels to me that remote companies are less strict about this requirement, because they know they'll get hundreds of applicants and can afford to select the one with the most relevant experience.

In the analysis by Industry it's also unsurprising that Technology comes on top, with ~42% of all fully remote jobs.

However, I'm learning through the data that the Healthcare sector has a high number of fully remote jobs, with over 6% of the total. Followed by Finance with 5%. It's also interesting to see the long tail touching almost all business areas with some number of fully remote jobs, even if a very small one in most of them.

I had to run this query. Just to not be surprised at all. As a CTO, I've been working with startups for the last 10 years, I know that nowadays startups are remote by default. But it's still impactful to see that 65% of all fully remote jobs are offered by startup companies. And if you think that most startups are small, this means that large thousands of fully remote startups are hiring a few roles each. It's a big long tail, and certainly a challenge to find all those jobs across so many companies.

Also worth noting the irrelevance of Big Tech for fully remote jobs. Indeed, most of those well known companies either returned to the office or have some local remote or hybrid policy around their offices. This is all the buzz we see in the news, and some might believe that remote jobs no longer exist. That's very misleading.

Finally, in the breakdown by department we see Engineering leading, but Sales and Marketing giving a solid follow.

Seems like if you aren't a tech profile, your best bet at finding a fully remote job is in the sales,  marketing, ops or customer support teams of tech companies, especially startups.

Uff, this was a long one. You can tell I'm very excited to poke into the data I have.

Within a couple minutes you can find the pre-filled job application form in each job card:

4/ One-click confirmation

For now, I'm requiring you to review and click this submit button for every job, as I want you to feel in control of your applications, and I want to capture feedback on quality of this flow. I might make it more automated upon some configs in the future.

Once you submit a job for Auto Apply, the copilot will submit your application in the following minutes/hours (depending on work load). You'll get these messages on your email on a frequent basis, like I'm receiving for the past couple weeks during testing:
