Nomad while working remotely

Last week I told you about the actual reason why I've been writing about Remote Work for all this time. I continue enjoying the impact my content has on people, and the testimonials I receive.

Today, let's discuss the freedom that remote work allows, and what people do with it.

You see those social media influencers nomading in Bali, Chiang Mai, and other tropical places. But I can tell you that 90%+ of the people I've worked with in my remote teams are actually seating in their home office, somewhere on Earth.

I'm one of those myself. On a normal day I'm at my home office near Lisbon, Portugal, and most of my work is done from there. I do travel more often than I used to, and occasionally work from abroad. Such as this week, I'm writing this newsletter in Denmark.

Remote work allows this freedom to switch location and to have a flexible schedule, and that's enough for most people. Myself included!

However, there are exceptions. The other less than 10% of remote workers I've worked with are nothing short of inspiring: Nomads. People living in vans in the wilderness. People moving with their families for a year to the other side of the world. I've seen it all.

 

This tech lead at one of my clients, whom I've worked with for almost 2 years now, has this goal of visiting every country on Earth, while working a full time job. Crazy, you might say. Well, he's more than halfway through.

He's had calls with me while sitting in 20-30 different countries during these ~2 years. Mexico, Venezuela, Canada, Kenya, Cape Verde, Benin, Fiji, Tonga, Turkey, and these are only some recent ones that come to mind.

The stories are wild. Certainly stuff I wouldn't do myself with kids, but very inspiring nevertheless. Even more impressive that he does that while working a full time job, and his CEO is totally fine with it, he doesn't see any impact on the Tech Lead's productivity. I love it.

It certainly helps that this client has a fully async remote culture and a small team of ~20 people. As a Fractional CTO, I've seen them onboard B2B clients, roll out new features, move cloud providers, etc. All while the Tech Lead is moving between random countries every few days.

Remote Work is an absolute game changer. And you certainly don't need to visit all countries on Earth to experience it. Flexibility and increased opportunities alone are enough of a game changer for most people. Like myself!
